KETAMINE INFUSIONS FOR CRPS | KETAMINE FOR CHRONIC PAIN

From CRPS to Lyme disease, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, and more, ketamine infusions have proven to be one of the most effective chronic pain management options. For many of our patients who receive ketamine infusions for the treatment of CRPS and other chronic pain conditions, these infusions have been life-changing. After receiving ketamine infusions, many patients find their pain levels manageable enough that they can return to a more active and fulfilling lifestyle. And isn’t that the goal?

Ketamine has long been used for pain relief in emergency care situations, and is, in fact, on the World Health Organization’s list of essential medicines, specifically for its ability to relieve acute pain. Clinics across the country offer infusions for the relief of chronic pain with impressive results, though more robust research is needed to convince late-adopters of the efficacy.

Encouragingly, the results of a recent meta-analysis found that ketamine infusions are a highly effective option for the relief of CRPS-related pain. The authors found that ketamine infusions were associated with immediate pain relief 69% of the time. Pain relief at follow up ranging from 1-3 months was 58%. For such a difficult to treat chronic pain condition, these statistics are quite promising.

Ketamine infusions for the treatment of chronic pain range between 2-hours and 4-hours, much longer than the 45-minute ketamine infusions used to treat depression and other psychiatric conditions.  Most patients will do best with a series of infusions at the initiation of treatment.  Patients then repeat their infusions as needed to manage their pain. Every individual is different: some need to repeat their ketamine infusions every month, while others are able to go up to 6-months between infusions.
