Physician-Led Migraine Care Serving Westminster and North Denver
At Vitalitas, we understand how recurring migraine attacks can disrupt work, sleep, concentration, plans, and everyday routines. At our Westminster clinic at 12110 North Pecos St, Suite 160, Westminster, CO 80234, we review your headache history, symptoms, medications, previous treatment, health history, safety factors, and goals before determining whether IV ketamine therapy may be appropriate for your care.
When Migraine Becomes Persistent or Difficult to Treat
Migraine is a neurological condition involving recurring attacks that can include moderate to severe headache pain along with other symptoms. Migraine is more than simply a severe headache, and symptoms can vary significantly from one person to another.
Migraine attacks may involve:
Throbbing or pulsating headache pain
Pain that is often more prominent on one side of the head
Nausea or vomiting
Sensitivity to light, sound, or smells
Fatigue or difficulty concentrating
Visual, sensory, or speech changes associated with aura in some people
Symptoms lasting from hours to days
Headache or related symptoms that interfere with everyday activities
Some people experience occasional migraine attacks, while others have frequent or chronic symptoms. Treatment may include medications used during an attack, preventive medications, lifestyle strategies, and other migraine-specific approaches.
Not every treatment works for every patient. When migraine attacks remain frequent, disabling, or difficult to manage despite previous care, additional treatment options may be considered.
IV Ketamine Therapy for Migraine
At Vitalitas, we provide physician-led IV ketamine therapy for selected patients with chronic migraines and refractory headaches.
Ketamine is FDA-approved as a general anesthetic. Its use for migraine and other chronic pain conditions is off-label, meaning ketamine has not been FDA-approved specifically to treat migraine. The FDA provides additional context on the current use of ketamine in emerging areas of therapeutic interest.
Ketamine is an NMDA receptor antagonist that affects glutamate signaling involved in pain processing. Researchers have investigated whether these effects may be relevant to difficult-to-treat headache disorders, including migraine.
The evidence remains limited and mixed. A 2021 systematic review of ketamine for migraine and other primary headache disorders identified five randomized controlled trials involving 193 participants and evaluated ketamine delivered through different routes, including intranasal, subcutaneous, and intravenous administration. The quality of evidence was rated very low because of small study sizes, variation between studies, and risk of bias. Results differed by route and comparator, and the included IV ketamine trial did not show superiority over the comparison treatment. The authors called for additional controlled research.
We approach ketamine accordingly. IV ketamine is not a cure for migraine, and it does not replace established migraine treatment when acute medications, preventive therapies, neurological care, or other approaches remain appropriate. Instead, off-label IV ketamine may be considered for selected patients after careful evaluation.

Careful Screening and Physician-Led Migraine Treatment
Having migraine does not automatically mean ketamine therapy is appropriate. Migraine patterns, previous treatment, other headache conditions, medications, health history, and safety factors all matter when considering off-label IV ketamine.
Before recommending treatment, we consider your:
Migraine and headache symptoms
Frequency and duration of symptoms
How migraine affects daily life and function
Medical history and current medications
Previous acute and preventive treatments
Clinical stability and safety factors
Treatment goals and expectations
Ability to receive outpatient ketamine treatment safely
If IV ketamine treatment moves forward, our care model includes:
Individualized planning based on your symptoms, history, previous care, and clinical needs
Physician oversight throughout treatment
Clinical monitoring of heart rate, heart rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen level, and how you are feeling during the infusion
Follow-up to review your response and guide future treatment decisions
Care coordination with the clinician managing your migraine, chronic pain, or other ongoing care when appropriate
Not everyone with migraine will be a candidate for ketamine therapy. We believe careful screening, clear recommendations, and realistic expectations are essential parts of responsible chronic pain care.
What to Expect From Ketamine Treatment for Migraine
Ketamine treatment at Vitalitas begins with a clinical consultation. We review your symptoms, headache history, medications, previous treatment, health history, goals, and whether outpatient IV ketamine therapy can be provided safely and appropriately.
If treatment is recommended, IV ketamine is administered in a private room with physician oversight and clinical monitoring. Chronic pain treatments at Vitalitas are longer and more individualized than mental health infusions, so the length of migraine treatment depends on your clinical plan, response, tolerance, and safety needs.
You will need transportation home after treatment. For the remainder of the treatment day, you should avoid driving, operating heavy machinery, alcohol, intense work, and major decisions.
Follow-up is part of the care process. We review your response and overall progress before making decisions about continued treatment. For migraine, that may include considering headache patterns, symptom severity, frequency, functional impact, and how attacks are affecting everyday life.
When appropriate, we can also coordinate with the neurologist, primary care clinician, pain specialist, or other provider involved in your ongoing care.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ketamine for Migraine
-
No. Ketamine is FDA-approved as a general anesthetic, but its use for migraine and other chronic pain conditions is off-label. We discuss that distinction during the evaluation process so you can make an informed decision about treatment.
-
Ketamine may be considered for selected patients whose chronic migraine or refractory headache symptoms remain difficult to manage despite previous treatment. Candidacy depends on your headache history, symptoms, medications, previous care, medical history, clinical stability, safety profile, goals, and whether outpatient ketamine treatment is appropriate.
-
No. Ketamine does not cure migraine or guarantee that migraine attacks will stop. Research into ketamine for migraine remains limited, and results vary. We review your response and overall progress before making decisions about continued treatment.
-
Ketamine should not be considered a replacement for established migraine care when acute medications, preventive treatment, neurological care, or other therapies remain appropriate. When appropriate, we coordinate with the clinician already managing your migraine treatment.
-
Chronic pain infusions at Vitalitas are longer and more individualized than mental health infusions. Treatment length depends on your clinical plan, response, tolerance, and safety needs.
